Ubuntu Maverick Meerkat - Is It For You?

Ubuntu has all the time been hailed as the best Linux Distribution for new users of Linux. It is very user-friendly and makes it easy for new users to get accustomed to the Linux environment. Ubuntu releases a new version of its Os once every six months, and the past two releases haven't got favourable reviews from the Linux community, just because they didn't offer many user-friendly features. Actually, there wasn't anything wrong with the old releases; some users just didn't find all ready for them, and this led them to believe that Ubuntu wasn't suited for them. Other distributions, like Linux Mint (which is based on Ubuntu) gave users features that Ubuntu didn't (like sustain for mp3 immediately after installation), and this made a dent in Ubuntu's image. But all that is set to convert with the latest version, named as Maverick Meerkat.

To be honest, there aren't many changes in the appearance of Maverick Meerkat when compared to the old publish (Lucid Lynx). In fact, to the untrained eye, there won't be any graphic changes at all. But there are assuredly some very decent changes in the latest version that will help new users of Linux get used to the interface in a much more easier manner.

Netbook Linux

No, out-of-the-box sustain for mp3s is still not ready in Ubuntu, but it has come to be easier to setup the required codecs to play mp3s. Well Ubuntu isn't just about mp3s. The most useful highlight upgrade is possibly the revamp of the Ubuntu Software Center, which is being upgraded for the third time in a row! The new Software center makes it all the more easier to download and setup software with the click of a button. This is a lifesaver for users who do not know how to setup software using the Synaptic holder Manager.

Another new highlight is the inclusion of Rhythmbox player controls in the volume menu. Fans of the Rhythmbox player can now operate their playlists from within the volume menu, without having to invoke the player each time.

Apart from this, the Ubuntu kernel has been modified to make the interface more smoother, and run faster. The changes are more evident on a slower computer, such as a netbook. Until Ubuntu 10.04, on inescapable netbooks, a faulty agenda would ice the entire system. But now such a thing rarely happens and only the faulty agenda freezes. This small incident is testimony to the fact that Ubuntu has undergone a lot of changes in its core!

It's been over a month since the new version of Ubuntu has been launched. So if you haven't yet got it, go get it soon for free!
